DO GHOSTS HAVE SHADOWS?
In collaboration with Léa Dumayet
2022
Do ghost have shadows? is a series of sculptures made with four hands: the images are printed on transparent plexiglass plates visible from both sides with a glossy side another one matte, curved and stretched in space by wires, tensioners and weights.
Marguerite Bornhauser presents reworked negative photographs - painted or colored - from her series When black is burned. A series at the margin between reality and fiction, poetry and everyday life, which plays with the codes of abstraction and photographic figuration to plunge us into a chiaroscuro universe, colored and bright full of shadows, ghosts and contemplative reveries.
On her side, the sculptor Léa Dumayet manipulates cast iron weights, plexiglass plates and elastic stretchers. In a few simple gestures, she unites the objects to create rounded forms with the appearance of boat sails or kites. The sculptures are light, airy and yet under strong tension : each sheet of plexiglass is bent to its utmost, sometimes dangerously close to bursting. The visible knots and hooks tell how the work is held together by very little.
Léa Dumayet and Marguerite Bornhauser have been collaborating since 2017 around the question of the image in volume - date of their first exhibition “Plongée” in the Espace Ourcq Blanc in Paris. There they presented projections of images on huge anti-hail nets in tension and twisting in space that gave rise to ephemeral and moving photographic sculptures, accompanied by sound work. Then, in 2021, they imagined their series of photographic sculptures “Chimera”, mixing photo prints on silk muslin and metal structures, magnets and natural stones. “Chimera” was presented in various exhibitions in 2021 and 2022: at the Beaurepaire Gallery, the Madé Gallery (in Paris?), the Art Center Le Grand Café in Saint-Nazaire and during the exhibition Sillons organized by Fertile in Paris. Their last collaboration "Do Ghost have shadows?" is currently being shown at the Carlos Carvalho gallery in Lisbon (2022-2023).
